Anyone who drives a lot for professional reasons knows how arduous everyday life on the move can be. Fortunate, therefore, those whose company cars are equipped with good assist technologies that can provide support (not just) in precarious situations. This is also the opinion of the European New Car Assessment Programme, or NCAP for short, which is known for its crash test procedures. For a number of years now, vehicle testers have been scrutinising the area of convenience and assist systems more closely, too. Recently tested: the new ID.5 with Travel Assist – and with impressive results.¹⁾ ²⁾
Top marks
As part of their additional test procedures, the testers certified that the assist systems in the all-electric SUV Coupé offer optimum convenience and an excellent assist standard. Tests were carried out in various categories, which aim to highlight different issues, such as:
- Vehicle Assistance: How effectively does the system support the driver in avoiding a potential accident?
- Driver Engagement: How do the driver and system interact?
- Safety Backup: What is the vehicle’s ability to avoid collisions and mitigate any accidental consequences that may arise?
Travel Assist with Swarm Data²⁾
To put it briefly: the new ID.5 was able to provide convincing answers all round. Euro NCAP highlights the following in its assessment: “The Volkswagen ID.5 offers very good vehicle assistance. Combined with excellent safety support, the system offers very good support in general – especially on the motorway.”

“Travel Assist with Swarm Data” can actively keep the vehicle in its lane and maintain a minimum distance to the vehicle in front as well as the maximum speed set by the driver. Adaptive lane guidance is one of the features used by the system to do this. This actively keeps the vehicle in the middle of the lane. However, “Travel Assist with Swarm Data” adapts to your driving style too and can also drive further to the left or right in its own lane instead of exactly in the middle.

“Travel Assist with Swarm Data” can actively support lane changes, if required, from a speed of 90 km/h. If activated, the lane change can be initiated and activated with the one-touch indicator function. A prerequisite here is that the sensors have not detected any objects in their vicinity and the capacitive steering wheel senses the driver’s hands. The vehicle then independently steers into the required lane. The driver can intervene at any time and take over the manoeuvre.
The assist system also includes predictive cruise control and cornering assistance. The vehicle speed can be adapted to the relevant speed limits and road layouts (bends, roundabouts etc.). If anonymised mass location data from other Volkswagen vehicles is available, the new Travel Assist can also provide support on roads with just one lane marking – for example on country roads without medial lane markings.
Important for fleet managers
“Travel Assist with Swarm Data” is available on request with immediate effect in Europe in all newly produced ID. models with the ID. 3.0 software.³⁾

The specified fuel consumption and emission data have been determined according to the measurement procedures prescribed by law. Since 1st September 2017, certain new vehicles are already being type-approved according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), a more realistic test procedure for measuring fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. Starting on September 1st 2018, the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) will be replaced by the WLTP in stages. Owing to the more realistic test conditions, the fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions measured according to the WLTP will, in many cases, be higher than those measured according to the NEDC. Therefore, the usage of CO₂ emission values measured according to WLTP for vehicle taxation from 1st September 2018 on can cause changes in this regards as well. For further information on the differences between the WLTP and NEDC, please visit https://www.volkswagen.de/wltp.
We are currently still required by law to state the NEDC figures. In the case of new vehicles which have been type-approved according to the WLTP, the NEDC figures are derived from the WLTP data. It is possible to specify the WLTP figures voluntarily in addition until such time as this is required by law. In cases where the NEDC figures are specified as value ranges, these do not refer to a particular individual vehicle and do not constitute part of the sales offering. They are intended exclusively as a means of comparison between different vehicle types. Additional equipment and accessories (e.g. add-on parts, different tire formats, etc.) may change the relevant vehicle parameters, such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, and, in conjunction with weather and traffic conditions and individual driving style, may affect fuel consumption, electrical power consumption, CO₂ emissions and the performance figures for the vehicle.
Further information on official fuel consumption figures and the official specific CO₂ emissions of new passenger cars can be found in the “Guide on the fuel economy, CO₂ emissions and power consumption of new passenger car models”, which is available free of charge at all sales dealerships and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, D-73760 Ostfildern, Germany and at www.dat.de.
